Henry Hill [edit]

  • Equally far back every bit I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster. To me, existence a gangster was improve than being President of the Usa. Fifty-fifty before I outset wandered into the cabstand for an after-school job, I knew I wanted to exist a office of them. It was at that place that I knew that I belonged. To me, it meant beingness somebody in a neighborhood that was full of nobodies. They weren't similar anybody else. I mean, they did whatever they wanted. They double-parked in front of a hydrant and nobody ever gave them a ticket. In the summer when they played cards all night, nobody e'er called the cops.
  • Paulie might've moved tiresome, simply it was only because Paulie didn't have to move for anybody.
  • He knew what went on at that cab stand up, and every once in a while I'd have to take a beating. But by then I didn't intendance. The way I saw it everybody takes a chirapsia former.
  • Hundreds of guys depended on Paulie and he got a piece of everything they made. And it was tribute, just similar in the quondam country, except they were doing it here in America. And all they got from Paulie was protection from other guys looking to rip them off. And that's what it'south all about. That's what the FBI could never understand. That what Paulie and the organization does is offer protection for people who can't go to the cops. That's it. That's all. They're like the police section for wiseguys.
  • One day some of the kids from the neighborhood carried my mother'southward groceries all the way home. You know why? It was outta respect.
  • For us to alive whatsoever other manner was nuts. Uh, to us, those goody-practiced people who worked shitty jobs for bum paychecks and took the subway to work every twenty-four hours and worried about their bills were expressionless. I mean they were suckers. They had no balls. If we wanted something, we only took information technology. If anyone complained twice they got hitting and then bad, believe me, they never complained once again.
  • Now the guy'southward got Paulie as a partner. Any bug, he goes to Paulie. Problem with the bill? He tin can go to Paulie. Problem with the cops, deliveries, Tommy, he can call Paulie. But now the guy's gotta come with Paulie's coin every week, no matter what. Business organization bad? "Fuck you, pay me." Oh, y'all had a fire? "Fuck you, pay me." Place got striking past lightning, huh? "Fuck you lot, pay me." Also, Paulie could do annihilation. Especially run up bills on the joint'southward credit. And why not? Nobody'southward gonna pay for it anyway. And as shortly as the deliveries are made in the front door, yous move the stuff out the back and sell information technology at a discount. You take a two hundred dollar example of booze and you sell information technology for a hundred. It doesn't matter. Information technology'south all profit. And then finally, when in that location's goose egg left, when you can't infringe some other cadet from the bank or buy another case of booze, you bust the joint out. You low-cal a match.
  • For well-nigh of the guys, killings got to exist accustomed. Murder was the only way that everybody stayed in line. You lot got out of line, yous got whacked. Everybody knew the rules. But sometimes, even if people didn't go out of line, they got whacked. I mean, hits only became a habit for some of the guys. Guys would become into arguments over nothing and earlier you knew it, one of them was expressionless. And they were shooting each other all the time. Shooting people was a normal thing. It was no large deal. We had a serious problem with Billy Batts. This was really a touchy matter. Tommy'd killed a fabricated guy. Batts was role of the Gambino coiffure and was considered untouchable. Earlier you lot could touch a made guy, y'all had to have a adept reason. Y'all had to accept a sitdown, and you better get an okay, or you'd be the one who got whacked.
  • Sabbatum night was for wives, but Fri night at the Copa was always for the girlfriends.
  • See, you know when you retrieve of prison, yous get pictures in your mind of all those old movies with rows and rows of guys behind confined...Just it wasn't like that for wiseguys. It actually wasn't that bad. Excepting that I missed Jimmy. He was doing his fourth dimension in Atlanta...I mean, everybody else in the joint was doing real time, all mixed together, living similar pigs. But nosotros lived alone. And we endemic the joint.
  • [after the Lufthansa heist] It fabricated him ill to take to turn money over to the guys who stole it. He'd rather whack 'em. Anyway, what did I care? I wasn't asking for anything and besides, Jimmy was making nice coin with me through my Pittsburgh connections. [showing a montage of expressionless gangsters] Simply all the same, months after the robbery they were finding bodies all over. [police surround a truck, open it to see a expressionless man hanging on a claw similar a meat husk] When they plant Carbone in the meat truck, he was frozen and so strong information technology took them two days to thaw him out for the dissection.
  • You lot know, nosotros always chosen each other goodfellas. Like you said to, uh, somebody, "You're gonna similar this guy. He'south all correct. He'south a good fella. He'due south one of united states of america." You lot understand? Nosotros were goodfellas. Wiseguys. Merely Jimmy and I could never exist made because we had Irish claret. It didn't even matter that my mother was Sicilian. To become a member of a crew you've got to be one hundred per cent Italian so they can trace all your relatives dorsum to the old country. See, it's the highest honor they can give y'all. It ways you belong to a family and coiffure. Information technology means that nobody tin fuck around with you. Information technology also means y'all could fuck around with anybody just as long equally they aren't as well a member. It's similar a license to steal. It's a license to do annihilation. As far equally Jimmy was concerned with Tommy existence made, information technology was like nosotros were all beingness made. We would now take i of our ain as a fellow member.
  • [most Tommy'due south murder] It was revenge for Billy Batts, and a lot of other things. And there was nothing that we could exercise almost it. Batts was a made man and Tommy wasn't. And nosotros had to sit down even so and accept it. Information technology was among the Italians. It was real greaseball shit. They even shot Tommy in the confront and then his mother couldn't give him an open coffin at the funeral.
  • For a second, I idea I was expressionless, but when I heard all the racket I knew they were cops. Only cops talk that way. If they had been wiseguys, I wouldn't have heard a thing. I would've been dead.
  • If you lot're part of a crew, nobody ever tells y'all that they're going to kill y'all. It doesn't happen that way. In that location weren't whatsoever arguments or curses similar in the movies. So your murderers come up with smiles. They come up equally your friends, the people who have cared for you all of your life, and they always seem to come at a time when you're at your weakest and most in need of their help.
  • Information technology was easy for all of us to disappear. My house and cars were either registered in the name of my married woman or my mother-in-law. My driver's license and social security number were phony. I never voted; never paid taxes. My nascence certificate, arrest canvas, and my service record from the Ground forces were all that existed to prove to the regime I was ever alive.
  • See, the hardest affair for me was leaving the life. I still love the life. And we were treated like moving-picture show stars with muscle. We had information technology all, only for the asking. Our wives, mothers, kids, everybody rode along. I had paper bags filled with jewelry stashed in the kitchen. I had a carbohydrate basin full of coke next to the bed. Annihilation I wanted was a telephone call away. Free cars. The keys to a dozen hideout flats all over the city. I'd bet xx, thirty grand over a weekend and then I'd either accident the winnings in a week or go to the sharks to pay back the bookies. Didn't affair. It didn't mean anything. When I was broke I would get out and rob some more. We ran everything. Nosotros paid off cops. We paid off lawyers. We paid off judges. Everybody had their easily out. Everything was for the taking. And now information technology's all over. And that's the hardest part. Today, everything is different. There'southward no action. I have to wait around like everyone else. Can't fifty-fifty go decent nutrient. Right after I got hither, I ordered some spaghetti with marinara sauce and I got egg noodles and ketchup. I'chiliad an average nobody. I get to live the rest of my life similar a schnook.

Karen Hill [edit]

  • Ane night, Bobby Vinton sent us champagne. There was nothing like information technology. I didn't think in that location was anything foreign in any of this. You know, a xx-one-year-erstwhile child with such connections. He was an exciting guy. He was actually prissy. He introduced me to everybody. Everybody wanted to exist overnice to him. And he knew how to handle it.
  • I know there are women, like my best friends, who would have gotten out of at that place the minute their boyfriend gave them a gun to hide. But I didn't. I gotta admit the truth. It turned me on.
  • Well, we weren't married to ix-to-five guys, but the first time I realized how different was when Mickey had a hostess political party. They had bad peel and wore too much brand-upwards. I hateful, they didn't look very expert. They looked mussed-up. And the stuff they wore was thrown together and inexpensive. A lot of pant suits and double knits. And they talked about how rotten their kids were and virtually beating them with broom handles and leather belts. Only that the kids still didn't pay any attending...After a while, it got to be all normal. None of it seemed like crimes. It was more like Henry was enterprising and that he and the guys were making a few bucks hustling, while the other guys were sitting on their asses waiting for hand-outs. Our husbands weren't brain surgeons. They were blue-collar guys. The only style they could make extra money, real extra money, was to exit and cut a few corners...We were all so very close. I mean, at that place were never any outsiders around. Admittedly never. And being together all the time made everything seem all the more normal.
  • We always did everything together and we always were in the same crowd. Anniversaries, christenings. We just went to each other'southward houses. The women played cards, and when the kids were born, Mickey and Jimmy were e'er the first at the hospital. And when we went to the Islands or Vegas to vacation, we e'er went together. No outsiders, ever. It got to exist normal. It got to where I was even proud that I had the kind of hubby who was willing to go out and hazard his cervix merely to get us the little extras.
  • But still I couldn't hurt him. How could I hurt him? I couldn't even bring myself to leave him. The truth was that no affair how bad I felt I was still very attracted to him. Why should I give him to someone else? Why should she win?

Dialogue [edit]

Jimmy: [To young Henry, after he gets cleared in courtroom] Congratulations, here's your graduation nowadays [Puts money in Henry's pocket]
Henry: For what? I got pinched.
Jimmy: Hey, everybody gets pinched, but you did information technology correct. You told 'em nothing and they got zippo.
Henry: I idea you'd be mad.
Jimmy: I'm non mad, I'chiliad proud of ya. You took your outset compression similar a human being, and you learned the two nigh important things in life. You listenin'? Never rat on your friends, and Always keep your oral fissure close. [Gives Henry an affectionate light slap on the cheek and leads him out of the courtroom. Outside, Paulie and many of the other gangsters are waiting for him.]
Paulie: Hey, you bankrupt yer crimson! [The other gangsters cheer and congratulate Henry]

Henry: You're a pistol! You're really funny. Yous're really funny!
Tommy: What do you mean I'k funny?
Henry: It'southward funny, you know. It'due south a good story, it's funny, you lot're a funny guy!
Tommy: [dangerously] What practice you mean? You mean the style I talk? What?
[Anybody becomes placidity]
Henry: It'southward just, you know, yous're only funny. It's funny, the mode you tell the story and everything.
Tommy: Funny how? I hateful, what's funny about it?
Anthony: Tommy, no, y'all got it all wrong —
Tommy: Oh, oh, Anthony. He'southward a large boy, he knows what he said. [to Henry] What did ya say? Funny how?
Anthony: You lot're right.
Henry: Just —
Tommy: What?
Henry: Merely, ya know, you're funny.
Tommy: You hateful, permit me sympathise this, 'cause, ya know maybe it's me, I'k a little fucked upwards maybe, simply I'chiliad funny how? I mean funny similar I'thousand a clown? I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'g here to fuckin' amuse you? What exercise you mean funny? Funny how? How am I funny?
Henry: Only... you know, how you tell the story — what?
Tommy: No, no, I don't know. You said information technology! How do I know? You lot said I'one thousand funny. How the fuck am I funny? What the fuck is so funny about me?! Tell me, tell me what's funny!
[Long suspension]
Henry: Go the fuck out of here, Tommy!
[Anybody laughs]
Tommy: Ya motherfucker! I almost had him, I near had him! Y'all stuttering prick, you! Frankie, was he shaking? I wonder near you lot sometimes, Henry. Y'all may fold under questioning!

Karen: [narrating] Afterward awhile, it got to exist all normal. None of it seemed similar crime. It was more like Henry was enterprising, and that he and the guys were making a few bucks hustling, while all the other guys were sitting on their asses, waiting for handouts. Our husbands weren't brain surgeons, they were blue-collar guys. The only way they could make extra money, real actress money, was to become out and cut a few corners.
[Cuts to Henry and Tommy hijacking a truck]
Tommy: Where's the strongbox, you fuckin' varmint?!
Karen: [narrating] We were all so very close. I mean, there were never any outsiders effectually. Absolutely never. And existence together all the fourth dimension fabricated everything seem all the more normal.

Karen: [narrating, at a makeup political party with other wives] Information technology was rough seeing the wives of other gangsters. They did non take intendance of themselves; they looked beat up and their faces were caked with makeup. Most of the time was spent talking about how rotten their kids were; how they decked them or whipped them with electrical wiring and the kids nevertheless wouldn't pay attention. [later in her chamber] I don't call back I tin can do it, Henry.
Henry: Do what?
Karen: This whole thing. Jeannie said her hubby was sent to jail. God forbid, what if that happened to you?
Henry: Bet she didn't tell you why her married man went there?
Karen: How come?
Henry: To get away from Jeannie! Karen, when it comes to the Mafia no one goes to jail unless they want to. Nosotros beat the organisation and I got it all figured out. I am organized; I got my shit together. You know who goes to jail? Nigger stickup men. Know why they get caught? Because they fall asleep in the getaway car.

Tommy: Just don't go bustin' my assurance, Billy, okay?
Billy: Hey, Tommy, if I was gonna suspension your balls, I'd tell you to go home and get your shine box. [To his friends] Now this child, this child was slap-up. They, they used to call him Spitshine Tommy. I swear to God! Now he'd make your shoes look like fuckin' mirrors. 'Scuse my language. He was terrific, he was the best. He fabricated a lot of money, too. Salud, Tommy!
Tommy: No more shines, Billy.
Billy: What?
Tommy: I said no more shines. Perhaps you didn't hear almost it, y'all've been away a long time; they didn't go up there and tell you. I don't shine shoes anymore.
Billy: Relax, volition ya? You lot flipped right out, what's got into yous? I'grand breakin' your balls a petty bit, that'southward all. I'm only kiddin' with ya.
Tommy: Sometimes you don't sound similar yous're kidding, you know? There'due south a lotta people around...
Baton: Tommy, I'm merely kiddin' with you. We're having a party and I just came home, and I haven't seen you in a long time, and I'm breakin' your balls, and correct away you lot're getting fuckin' fresh. I'one thousand sorry, I didn't mean to offend you.
Tommy: I'grand sorry too. It's okay. No problem.
Billy: Okay, salud. [moment of silence as he takes a beverage] Now go domicile and become ya fuckin' shinebox!
Tommy: [smashes his glass in anger] Motherfuckin' mutt! You, you fuckin' piece of shit...! [Henry and Jimmy restrain him]
Billy: [taunting] Yeah, yeah, aye, come on, come up on! Come up on! Let him become!
Tommy: Henry, he bought his fucking button! That fake one-time tough guy! Y'all bought your fucking button! Go along that motherfucker here, keep him here! [leaves]

Tommy: Spider, that bandage on your human foot is bigger than your fucking head. Next affair you know he'll have one of these fucking walkers. Merely you can still dance. Give us a couple of fucking steps, Spider. Y'all fucking bullshitter, you. Tell the truth. You lot want sympathy, is that right, sweetie?
Spider: Why don't you go fuck yourself, Tommy?
[Everyone, but Tommy, laughs]
Jimmy: I didn't hear correct. I can't believe what I heard. [giving Spider greenbacks] This is for yous. I got respect for this kid, he's got a lot of fucking balls. Expert for yous! Don't take no shit off nobody! A guy shoots him in the foot, he tells him to go fuck himself. Tommy, you gonna let this fucking punk get away with that? What's this earth coming to?
Tommy: [standing and shooting Spider] That's what the fucking world'southward coming to, how do ya like that? How's that?
Henry: What is wrong with yous?!
Jimmy: What is the fucking matter with you?! What, are you lot stupid or what?! I was kidding with you. Are you a ill maniac?
Tommy: How do I know you're kidding? You breaking my fucking balls?!
Jimmy: I'm fucking kidding with you, you fucking shoot the guy?!
Henry: [inspecting Spider on the floor] He'due south dead.
Tommy: [after a brief silence] I'g a practiced shot, what practise you want from me?
Anthony: How could you miss at this altitude?
Tommy: You got a trouble with what I did, Anthony? Fucking rat, anyway. His family's all rats, he'd have grown up to be a rat.
Jimmy: Stupid bounder, I tin't fucking believe you. Now, you're gonna dig the fucking thing now. You're gonna dig the hole. I got no fucking lime, you're gonna do it.
Tommy: Fine! I'll dig the fucking pigsty, I don't give a fuck. What is information technology, the first hole I ever dug? I'll fucking dig the hole. Where are the shovels?

Paulie: [well-nigh Henry's cheating] Karen came to the business firm. She's very upset. This is no good; yous gotta straighten this out. We gotta have calm.
Jimmy: Nosotros don't know what she'll do.
Paulie: She'southward hysterical. Very excited. She's wild. And you got to have it easy. Y'all got children. I'm not saying go back to her this minute, just you lot got to go back. You got to keep upward appearances.
Jimmy: I got the two of them come to my house every day commiserating, the 2 of them. I simply can't have it. I tin't do it, Henry. I can't do it. Nobody says yous can't exercise what yous want. We all know that. This is what information technology is. We know what it is. Y'all have to do what'due south right. You take to go home to the family. Yous got to get home, okay? Wait at me. You got to go home. Smarten upwardly.
Paulie: I'll talk to Karen. I'll straighten this out. I know just what to say to her. I'll say yous'll go back to her and it'll be similar when you first got married. I'll romance her. Information technology'll be beautiful. I know how to talk to her, especially to her. In the concurrently, Jimmy and Tommy were going to Tampa this weekend. Instead you get with Jimmy.
Jimmy: You come up with me.
Paulie: Have a practiced time. Sit in the dominicus. Take a few days off.
Jimmy: We'll have a good time.
Paulie: Later that, you'll go back to Karen. At that place's no other style. No divorce. We're non animoli.
Jimmy: No divorce. She'll never divorce him. She'll impale him, merely not divorce him. [they laugh]

Karen and her children are visiting Henry in jail
Guard: Mrs. Colina, this way. Sign this book, please.
Karen signs ledger but something catches her center
Name of Inmate: Henry Loma
Name of Visitor: Janice Rossi
Visitor's middle
Karen: I saw her, Henry.
Henry: What are yous talking about?
Karen: I saw her name in the register.
Henry: Jesus Christ.
Karen: You want her to visit you? Let her stay upwards all dark, crying and writing messages to the parole lath.
Henry: What am I doing hither? Where am I? I'm in jail. I can't stop people from coming to run into me.
Karen: Good. Let her sneak this stuff every week. [Karen dangles a bag of illegal drugs in front him] Let her fight these bastards every calendar week!
Henry: Look what you're doing! Stop it!
Karen: I'one thousand sorry. Let her sneak this shit in for you.
Henry: Will you stop it, Karen? Will you stop it?
Karen: Let her do it! Allow her do it!
Henry: STOP IT!!!
[Kids react to anger; Karen starts to sob]
Karen: Nobody is helping me. I am all alone. Belle and Morrie are bankrupt. I asked your friend Remo for the money that he owes you, and you know what he told me? He told me to take my kids down to the police station and get on welfare.
Henry: Karen, Information technology'south going to exist okay.
Karen: Aye? Fifty-fifty Paulie, since he got out, I've never seen him. I never see anybody anymore.
Henry: It'south only you and me. That'southward what happens when you become away. I told you that we're on our own. Forget everybody else. Forget Paulie. Equally long as he'south on parole, he doesn't want anybody doing anything.
Karen: I tin can't exercise it.
Henry: Yes, you lot can. Karen, Listen to me. All I demand is for you to bring me this stuff. I got a guy in here from Pittsburgh who'll help me move information technology. Believe me, in a month we're gonna be fine. We won't demand everyone.
Karen: I'm afraid. I'm afraid if Paulie finds out...
Henry: Or I merely say, Don't worry nigh him. He is not helping us out. Is he putting any food on the tabular array? We've gotta help each other. We've merely gotta-- Listen, We've gotta be actually conscientious while we exercise information technology.
Karen: I don't want to hear a word about her anymore, Henry.
Henry: Never.

Henry has simply been released from prison house
Henry's Children: Daddy! Are you lot out for skilful? Are you coming to my recital? Here is a picture I drew!
Henry takes a look at the low-hire tenement his wife and kids are looking in and reacts with disgust
Henry: Karen, become packed. We are moving out. I am going to Pittsburgh tommorow.
Karen: What? Y'all have a meeting with your parole officer tommorow.
Henry: Don't worry, they owe me $fifteen,000. Who wants to go to Uncle Paulie'south?
Children cheer. Cut to Paulie'southward house where people have a big dinner. Afterward Paulie speaks to Henry in private
Paulie: I do not desire any more than of that shit.
Henry: I accept no idea what'south going on here.
Paulie: I mean the drugs! I do non want any more than of that junk.
Henry: Paulie, why would I desire to get mixed up in that?
Paulie: Just don't exercise it. I am not talking most what you did in the can. Yous go a pass for that. In there you had to do what you had to do to back up your family. I am talking about hither and at present. I do not desire to end up like Gribbs. Gribbs got twenty years but for saying adept morning to some scuzz who was selling junk behind his back! Gribbs is lxx years sometime; the poor man is going to die in prison. So I am alarm everyone, information technology could be my son, it could exist anyone.
[Cut to Henry making cocaine]
Henry: [voiceover] It took me ii weeks of sneaking the stuff around, but when I did, information technology was a existent score. In a calendar month I had a down payment on my business firm and things were rolling. I knew every bit long as the greenbacks kept rolling in; Paulie would never find out.

Henry: [sniveling] Paulie, I am really sorry.
Paulie: You fucked upwardly expert. You looked me in the heart and treated me similar shit; like I was nobody.
Henry: I couldn't come to you; not after what you lot said to me. I was ashamed and then; I am ashamed at present. I swear on my kids, I am clean. But I got nowhere else to get. I could actually use some help at present.
Paulie: Take this.
[Paulie pulls a wad of cash out of his pocket and hands it to Henry]
Henry: Thanks.
Paulie: And now I have to turn my back on you. In that location is no other way.
Henry: [narrating] My reward for a lifetime of service to Paulie: $iii,200. Information technology was not even enough to pay for my casket.

Henry enters a diner
Henry{as narrator}: I got at that place 15 minutes early on, Jimmy was already there waiting for me.
Jimmy: All my life I said, do non talk on the telephone. Now you see why? Do non worry, I think you lot stand a good take a chance of beating this case.
Jimmy: There was a child we knew, turned out to exist a rat.
Henry: Really?
Jimmy: Aye. Institute him hiding in Florida. How would y'all feel nigh going with Anthony, take care of that guy?
[Jimmy slips a message with data. Screen freeze-frames]
Henry: [narrating] Jimmy never asked me to whack a guy earlier. Now in the midst of all this he is asking me to go to Florida and do a hitting with Anthony? [Screen resumes] That is when I knew I would have never returned from Florida alive.
